This week the sailfishing slowed a little but not much. Several dolphin and fun fish tournaments took place with good results and the weather looks like it is falling into our more normal moderate east to southeast winds. All of this is good stuff. Congrats to Capt Steve Smithies, owner Dr. Sanchez and their group aboard the “Priceless” that took home first place and a little over $26,000 for the top prize of the heaviest 5 dolphin. Congrats also to Capt. Jon Cooper and his charter group aboard his boat the “Diversion” for taking home first place in the Jim “Mad Dog” Mandich tournament out of Miami Beach Marina with the heaviest aggregate weight of dolphin, tuna and kingfish.

World Sailfish Championship sets catch record, Sailfish Pro Series playoff field. Six teams face-off in Miami for the chance to win $100,000 and the first Sailfish Pro Series title

The last week has been filled with enough offshore news for two columns. The World Sailfish Championship Tournament in Key West produced a new catch record for that event. The Sailfish Pro Series regular season is concluded, naming six teams that will go on to the finals in May. Offshore fishing in general all along the southeast coast has been phenomenal.

Spring-like conditions let anglers jump into action. Miss Britt with Capt. Brett Wilson and Mate Markian Galadza release 115 sails in six days. Every week for the past two weeks I’ve been saying spring is here, and every week has been a better example of what we can expect from spring-like conditions. I know you’re probably tired of hearing the same thing, but I’m not.

I will be in Key West for the World Sailfish this week so I thought I would get this out early. I don’t know if this is cover material but I think it might be. Feel free to call me if you need more info. I am including Tim’s email to me after our conversation. I asked him for some pictures and he sent these 3. I assume he agrees to our usage, I asked him to send these to me for my article. If you need the official ok I will call him back and have an email sent to me or you.

This week brought more great fishing to South Florida. In the last 5 days, blue water, north current and LOTS of sailfish have been the norm. Yesterday, Brett Wilson ran the 43’ “Miss Britt” and saw about 40 sails tailing down the faces of the north swells. Jimmy David on the “L&H” charter boat out of Crandon Marina caught a blue marlin about 200 lbs., while trolling a lure on 50 lb test. Darren Liddell and his family fished on the “L & H” for 3 days catching, in addition to the blue, 23 sails and 30 dolphin. Darren fishes from his wheelchair on an electric reel. The blue marlin was caught by one of his family members, but Darren did catch one sail and several other fish on his electric reel. Hats off to Darrin for not letting rough seas or cold weather keep him on shore!
