The calendar says that it is winter but the fish and i aren’t so sure! We have had some days of traditionally great winter time fishing but warm water species are still around. On January 4th while running a private boat “Weez in the Keys” we caught 44 sails in one day (a best day for all on board), of course that happened THE DAY BEFORE the Silver Sailfish Derby We went on to catch 28 sails the next day but fishing slowed considerably each day after that. Sailfishing has been good but not great since then but believe it or not the dolphin (mahi) fishing has remained strong since last summer. Yesterday , aboard the Miss Britt, the catch on a full charter was 15 dolphin to 40 lbs, several skipjack tunas and 2 muttons on the reef to 18 lbs. There have been cobias on the rays in 20 feet of water on the days we can see the bottom and there have been wahoos around near the full moons. Overall it has been a great winter so far and I have to say that i can’t complain about the weather or the fishing!
Thanks for checking in—Ray

Winter is around the corner and so are the sailfish! The really great thing is that the dolphin haven’t left yet. I have never seen dolphin fishing like this in October and November. We have had good summers and early falls before but this has been better late season fishing than I have ever seen. The fish are not only close to the reef but they are the usual 4 to 12 lbs that we usually see in the fall. Add to the picture a few sails, kingfish and swords and you have a recipe for great fishing trips. I don’t know how much longer this will last but we’ll take it for as long as mother nature will provide it.
On the sailfish scene, congratulations to Capt. Bill Wheita and the Blue Time fishing team for their convincing win in the Sailfish Cup Tournament last week out of Miami. They caught 13 sails in the 2 day competition. Sailfishing has been good but not great overall. We have seen a lot of green water this past month after having huge amounts of rainfall in September and October. It shows signs however of clearing out and blue water moving in. That’s all for now—I hope you can get out there and enjoy some time on the water!—Ray

It seems that fall is right on schedule. We are staring to see better bait fishing in the form of Threadfin Herring, Blue Runners and Pilchards which is normal for this time of year. The sailfish are starting to turn up in bigger numbers everyday as long as we have the conditions that make them bute. These conditions are north winds, north current and clean water. We have hed plenty of all 3 lately. We are still catching good amounts of Vermillion and yelloweye snappers in 200″ of water or more. The swords are biting good whenever we have made it offshore. I ran a trip last week with Jason Offerman as my mate and John Kiley from New England along with a bunch of his buddies. We caught 4 out of 7 swords, all at night. The mahi have thinned out but will probably show up on the edge now whenever we have a strong east wind. Winter is coming and it can’t get here soon enough!
Thanks—Ray

Fortunately we weren’t impacted here in Miami from the hurricane and hope for a quick recovery to all of those who were. One positive thing comes out of the hurricane season for offshore fishermen and that is the increased abundance of floating debris out in the dolpin waters. It seems that after a storm passes, especially if it travels near cuba and into the gulf, we will see lots of floating bamboo, trees and more. Last week I saw a tree so big that when the waves would wash over it the tree never moved, the waves simply rose and fell. This kind of debris usually houses an entire ecosystem around it. This ecosystem fortunately usuall includes dolphin (mahis), wahoos and tripletails. They hang around primarily because of the abundance of bait fish that will surround this kind of debris. For about the next month or two we will find this kind of debris fairly regularly and enjoy some of the best offshore fishing for nice sized dolphin, tripletails and wahoo. The second part of the equation that helps us locate this debris as well as creating very comfortable fishing conditions is calm weather. THe next two months are generally known for calm weather. These conditions allow us to fish what we call a “combo trip”. That is where we fish for dolphin… during the day, maybe make a drop or two for swordfish during the day, then stay out a few hours into the night and drift for swords near the surface. These trips are usually productive for several species.
If you ever get the chance to join us for one of these trips in September or October, i think you will enjoy it. Good fishing to you wherever you are—Ray Rosher

Sorry for the lack of reports for the last couple of months but i was out of town fishing some tournaments out of the country. I am back now for a while and fishing is as good as it gets here in Miami. The last reef trip I fished was last week and the yellowtails, bonitos and kingfish were biting good. We typically anchor in about 100′ of water and drift cut bait on light tackle back into the schools. We usually add a couple of live baits either flat lined or on a kite to give us a shot at sails, kings and bonitos while we are bottom fishing. The best fishing has actually been offshore for dolphin, commonly referred to as mahi or dorado. Every August and September we usually get at least a small run of nice sized schoolies and a few gaffers. This year they have shown up in good numbers. Capt Jason just called on his way in today with about 20 mahi up to about 20 lbs. A couple of days ago i ran one of the Miss Britt boats and Capt. Jason ran the other. Both of our charters had great fishing. Between the two boats we caught almost 50 mahis up to 30 lbs along with some nice tripletails. The last bright spot has been the swordfishing. We have caught nice swords on the last couple of trips up to almost 300 lbs. Most of this action has been at night but we have had a few bites during the day also.
I hope you can find time to get in one more trip before the cold fronts start coming and most of these fish fade away. Whether it is with us on one of the Miss Britt boats or with someone else, i hope you can get out there and enjoy some of the great fishing the fall has to offer.
Tight lines—Ray Rosher

Fishing this past week has been good for dolphin (mahi). Most of the fish have been a little further offshore, about 15 miles off of the reef. We fished monday afternoon and caught a limit of dolphin before dark then released a sword about 50 lbs on our first drift after dark. The last two days we have caught decent sized dolphin from about 5 to 15 lbs. There are still lots of bonitos on the edge of the reef in addition to a few sails, tunas and the occasional kingfish. The yellowtails should start biting better after this full moon and through the summer. That’s all for now, remember, you can’t catch ‘em if you don’t go!

Fishing this past week has been hampered by windy weather but there have been plenty of fish when you could get out. We got out fishing 2 days ago on the Miss Britt with Capt Jason running the boat. He fished an afternoon trip and caught 2 out of 4 sails in addition to kingfish, bonitos… Swordfishing has been good in recent weeks with our last trip producing a sword about 180 to 200 lbs out of 3 bites. One bite during the day and two at night. I have heard of several other boats catching swords also. Yellowtail fishing has been picking up over the last few days as well as the mangrove and mutton snapper fishing off of miami. Mahi have been showing up better in recent weeks and should continue to improve in the near future. One other bit of good news is that the wind is calming down and should stay relatively calm for a while. That’s all I have for now, I hope you can get out there and catch a few—Ray Rosher
