The calendar says that it is winter but the fish and i aren’t so sure! We have had some days of traditionally great winter time fishing but warm water species are still around. On January 4th while running a private boat “Weez in the Keys” we caught 44 sails in one day (a best day for all on board), of course that happened THE DAY BEFORE the Silver Sailfish Derby :-) We went on to catch 28 sails the next day but fishing slowed considerably each day after that. Sailfishing has been good but not great since then but believe it or not the dolphin (mahi) fishing has remained strong since last summer. Yesterday , aboard the Miss Britt, the catch on a full charter was 15 dolphin to 40 lbs, several skipjack tunas and 2 muttons on the reef to 18 lbs. There have been cobias on the rays in 20 feet of water on the days we can see the bottom and there have been wahoos around near the full moons. Overall it has been a great winter so far and I have to say that i can’t complain about the weather or the fishing!
Thanks for checking in—Ray

Sorry for the lack of reports for the last couple of months but i was out of town fishing some tournaments out of the country. I am back now for a while and fishing is as good as it gets here in Miami. The last reef trip I fished was last week and the yellowtails, bonitos and kingfish were biting good. We typically anchor in about 100′ of water and drift cut bait on light tackle back into the schools. We usually add a couple of live baits either flat lined or on a kite to give us a shot at sails, kings and bonitos while we are bottom fishing. The best fishing has actually been offshore for dolphin, commonly referred to as mahi or dorado. Every August and September we usually get at least a small run of nice sized schoolies and a few gaffers. This year they have shown up in good numbers. Capt Jason just called on his way in today with about 20 mahi up to about 20 lbs. A couple of days ago i ran one of the Miss Britt boats and Capt. Jason ran the other. Both of our charters had great fishing. Between the two boats we caught almost 50 mahis up to 30 lbs along with some nice tripletails. The last bright spot has been the swordfishing. We have caught nice swords on the last couple of trips up to almost 300 lbs. Most of this action has been at night but we have had a few bites during the day also.
I hope you can find time to get in one more trip before the cold fronts start coming and most of these fish fade away. Whether it is with us on one of the Miss Britt boats or with someone else, i hope you can get out there and enjoy some of the great fishing the fall has to offer.

Fishing this past week has been good for dolphin (mahi). Most of the fish have been a little further offshore, about 15 miles off of the reef. We fished monday afternoon and caught a limit of dolphin before dark then released a sword about 50 lbs on our first drift after dark. The last two days we have caught decent sized dolphin from about 5 to 15 lbs. There are still lots of bonitos on the edge of the reef in addition to a few sails, tunas and the occasional kingfish. The yellowtails should start biting better after this full moon and through the summer. That’s all for now, remember, you can’t catch ‘em if you don’t go!
