Swords are rare and mysterious. Miami seems to hold a decent size population on the edge of the continental shelf and the amount of shorts caught indicate they are reproducing at a good rate. The interesting thing is you don’t know what you’ve hooked into when you get a bite. We fish for these in 1500+ feet of water therefor the “bite” we see is a micro twitch on the rod tip. This could be from a fish weighing 50 to 500 or more pounds. Swordfish are able to swim up and down depths without being affected by the change in water pressure or temperature difference where any other fish would die. Swordfish fights can last hours upon hours where over 10-20 miles are covered for the duration of the fight. Top tier eating, these are textbook big game fishing with rod and reel set ups alone costing upwards of $5,000.
